Featured Academic Work

Thesis: Identity Management in Danish Hospitals

Completed: January 2017

In this thesis, I have investigated the challenges and opportunities in Identity Management on Sundhedsplatformen, to see how the healthcare sector is dealing with access management, since any potential issues can have dire consequences for the security of patient data. I have done this using the method of use case research. The data collected for this paper derives from six qualitative interviews with user groups consisting of Doctors, IT Professionals, and Identity Management Specialists. From these, five overall challenges and one opportunity were found: (1) the Implementation of two-factor authentication was done to ease usability for the users, however, users are still able to login through a combination of username and password; (2) user ID’s and password retrieval are dealt with in such a way that the level of security decreases; (3) there is an open-data policy that does not restrict unauthorized access to data, yet, it punishes those who defy it; (4) the creation of rights, roles and user groups has been done in such detail that the information attached to a certain user’s authentication is too large, requiring some users to lose rights to get new ones; and (5) legacy IT determines the choices of IT infrastructure, which limits the innovation and wishes to upgrade the current setup to support industrial standards in the field. Moreover, one opportunity was found: safe transportation of user credentials via Kerberos. The main conclusions are that poor usage of authentication schemes, disregard of known best practices, and the lack of ability to upgrade IT put the general security at the hospital at risk and jeopardize the security of patient data.

Blockchain: An Exploded View

Completed: June 2016

In this paper, I investigated the limitations of the blockchain, as well as the question on where does the technology break. In order to do that, I applied the method of use case research. Through five qualitative interviews with subject matter experts in different industries, I found three main issues in regards to the limitations on blockchain: scalability, transparency and redundancy, and hype. The main conclusion is that the blockchain is very young, and issues need to be dealt with before its faith can be determined, and thereby, answer where blockchain can change the current status quo.

Bachelor Thesis: Communicative genre negotiations on social media

Completed: January 2017

The conceptual framework for understanding social media as genres opens up to an analytical perspective that effectively describes the communicative practices on e.g. Facebook. This perspective is however relatively new and has thus not yet been used to effectively examine the communicative differences between different segments of users on Facebook. This study applies the conceptual framework of Stine Lomborg and examines the differences in Facebook through qualitative interviews using two segments; digital natives and digital immigrants as described by Marc Prensky. We challenge the theory looking at smaller segments and thus stressing the fact that Facebook has a wide range of genre interpretation between its users. Our results indicate that though the two segments have many things in common, there are still some fundamental differences in their use of Facebook. We explain that various levels of involvement, understand- ing and previous use of social media cause these differences. Conclusively we discuss the application of the genre framework on modern network-based social media without a communicative center in which to develop a joint understanding of the term genre.
